LWE Podcast 18: Patrice Bäumel

podcast-18

Patrice Bäumel often cuts close to the bone when crafting his floor-ready productions, leaving only the leanest wiry bits to rile dancers. Yet the Dutch producer’s singles for Get Physical and Trapez, remixes for MBF and Systematic, make a big impact with bare essentials. If his exclusive podcast mix is any indication, his DJing style offers a considerably fuller sound built on blends. After a successful residency at Club 11, Amsterdam’s (if not one of the world’s) finest and dearly departed, Bäumel has moved on to helm its successor, Trouw. Get a taste of the club’s go-to guy in this stirring new podcast.

When and where was the mix recorded?

Patrice Bäumel: The mix was recorded at the end of January 2009 in my home studio in Amsterdam.

What was the concept behind the mix?

To create interesting contrasts between tracks — combine warm with cold, human with abstract etc. — and to use sounds that are sonically interesting. Some of the tracks you hear on the mix are pretty heavily edited or unreleased and do not exist in that form anywhere else. That way people get to hear something fresh.

Who are a few of your favorite DJs past and present? Why?

A standout has to be Laurent Garnier, who created the blueprint of a great techno set in the 90’s. When he’s at his best, his mixing, selection and the emotion he puts into his sets have always boggled my mind. I really enjoy listening to DJs who play with a lot of balls and who don’t shy away to experiment on the dance floor, like Villalobos, Andy Weatherall or Aphex Twin. Autechre and Henrik Schwarz are also amazing live.

What can we expect from you in 2009?

I finished a remix for Bomb The Bass on Studio !K7 [that came] out in February, there are also tracks on MBF in the pipeline. For the rest I am dedicating most of my studio time working on my first album and getting a live act going. I will also take up a residency at Amsterdam’s new club Trouw, which has the potential to become an amazing venue, similar to Berghain in Berlin.

Really psyched to hear this one, his RA mix was quite unique.

Here’s something! Nice catch, Steve. In download…

Really looking forward to listening to this… I’ve heard a few Patrice sets and they’ve all been excellent – particularly the RA one, the bit with Errorsmith was amazing. Interestingly, quite a few of my friends who’s tastes don’t differ too much from mine weren’t so keen – they thought it was a bit too melodic and soft. But yeah, really hyped for this :)

Tom D  on April 24, 2009 at 5:37 AM

Enjoyed this, although not as much as his RA or Sonar sets on first listen. Thought the start was excellent, then around 30 minutes I started to lose a bit of interest – not to keen on the deep male vocal thing, but the fucked up noisy track at 40 minutes pulled me back in – especially when the beat kicks in under it, sounds awesome! The bit with all the flange before the end is maybe a bit OTT, but yeah, good stuff :) Definitely hoping to see Patrice again in the near future, had no idea who he was at last year’s Sonar but enjoyed it a lot..

I love how his mix always has weird electronica slants coupled with more straight house and techno bits, totally unique DJ. For example, the errorsmith that was mentioned from his RA podcast. The beginning of this one didn’t really do it for (think it was all the male vocals), to be honest but I’m rarely disappointed by Patrice. It was still good, just not my bag. Although, when it gets to track 8 I really got sucked in, love that Terrence Dixon track and the one following. Anyone have any idea as to who “360” is? LWE does it again with another very interesting podcast.

harpomarx42  on April 24, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Top-notch. A nice, smooth mix with lots of little surprises (Bomb The Bass remix, Francois K/Soundstream mashup). This is even better than his RA podcast, IMO.

Interesting podcast, nice! “360” is the DJ collective of Patrice with Nuno Dos Santos, who play together quite often.
