you're a lightweight man. i flew overnight from california only to meet a bunch of europeans in the customs line on tuesday. point being, people came from around the world and were at all the events. you missed out. i understand it's hard to show up early on the weeknights, but atom tm and mathew jonson/dandy jack were major highlights. best sets of the festival: moderat, thomas fehlmann, atom tm, tobias

cheers on another visitor to mutek! you said you drove 7 hours? where from originally? we drove about 10 hours+/- from cleveland, got into town tuesday (you must MUST stay at TRYLON apartments next year!) it's much cheaper than traditional hotels and they feature fully furnished apartments with kitchen, etc so all you have to do is shop and cook. in agreement, SND would have been a nice dancefloor presence, i disagree with NSI being interesting as any one of the myriad people in attendance could have made BETTER sounds given the helm of their tremendous rig of gear. i will say that the visuals that night were striking. key point you made is you nodded off! i was finding it tiring to stay attentive as well, not because i was being lulled, which happened during GAS-amazing! the theatre venue was great, basically a bigger EX CENTRIS (which was my favorite mutek venue ever, years ago). not to discredit tobias, he was BRILLIANT on the stage at metropolis. and to hear craig caning old jeff mills records, fantastic, i haven't heard on live since i saw mills himself and prior to that since richie hawtin played a handful at trancendence event in toronto! all in all a great mutek, would have LOVED the weather to have been better, however we can't choose. definately that sweatshirt that RV had on was awful! proof that money can't buy taste, although i don't suspect he's trying to win over people with his wardrobe. take care, thanks for the post.

@Elly: that's very interesting about Carl Craig... honestly, even though I was generally impressed at the time, it still felt a little stale somehow-- despite the performance's epic proportions, my friends and I all agreed we liked Tobias. better, and had little trouble deciding to leave an hour early.

Nice review! I was especially impressed with how you managed to describe the visual aspects of the performances with such eloquence.

I'd like to add my 2 cents to the discussion of Carl Craig's set: The only track I recognized during his set was Len Faki’s new one, “BX 3,”

Personally, I was quite disappointed because, although the set sounded phenomenal on that system, I recognized almost EVERY track he played. I love CC and he is a great DJ and outstanding producer, but he literally played the EXACT same sequence of about 10 tracks in a row that he dropped at the Paxahau boat party only a few days earlier. (off the top of my head, this included Michel Cleis & Salvatore Freda's "Collivo," on Cadenza followed by Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash," Octave One's "Blackwater," and UR's "Nights of the Jaguar," among others)

Yes, his mixing was great, but I was hoping for a little more variety and a less predictable set list, especially since he is now made the switch to digital DJing (and is likely armed with thousands of tracks on a given night).

Perhaps I should re-read it, too. He doesn't actually mention other people leaving Piknic, just that the weather sucked.

@ doesn't matter:

Perhaps you should re-read the recap? The writer mentions being tired at nsi. (after a long drive), that he took a break after Piknic 1, and after a full day at Piknic 2 and some of Nocturne 5. That is hardly a majority. And he was talking about other people leaving due to weather, not leaving himself, which is obvious when talks about the end of the Villalobos/Zip set.

Thanks for the roundup!
@bran
agreed--appleblim et al were amazing--the highlight of the festival for me--which made sunday's line-up seem a lot more meh.
@mkb
I think a lot of people were impressed technically with Akufen, but it never got really dancy. And I've seen Akufen tear the roof off places with his DJ sets, although this is the first time I've heard him live.

I'm so sad I missed Saturday's Nocturne!

Will, my experience was similar to yours. Except, I was there Thursday, and Moderat were the best act of the festival. Mathew Jonson and Dandy Jack were good, part of the set is out there for download.

@doesn't matter: i didn't even ask for press pass, I paid for everything and attended the festival at a leisurely pace with a group of friends, because I was there primarily to enjoy myself. I never considered leaving the Picnic, I only said there were moments where I wished it was at Metropolis, though in the end I was happy it stayed outside.

Thanks for the feedback though, would love to get some dieting tips from you.

Very nice write-up and makes me wish I could have made the trek (of course, I have apparently been wishing that for 10 years). Your post helps me to feel as though I really was there.

Thanks,
