Pedro, Sombre Fou
[Acid Milk Recordings] (buy mp3s
Listen to Pedro, “Stalingrad”: Riding hard on an overdriven riff which gently modulates across the scale, the tune expands with glittery, if a touch archaic, synth patterns which would sound cosmic in scope if used by a bearded Norwegian. “Stalingrad” has similarly rough hewn textures but is twice as complex. Its gruff progressions wobble in and out of focus, forcing a clipped house beat to hopscotch between hits. In under five minutes, Pedro builds a sweaty and imposing climax with dramatic swells and urgent, chiming klaxons such that ravers like Dusty Kid would raise their glowsticks in approval. Despite the mix up, “Sombre Fou” is still rather enjoyable, especially if you’re partial to the French touch scene which is showing surprising legs. Just remember, kids, check your sources. |

Discogs is perceived as the ultimate resource for info about house/techno releases. Labels and critics alike encourage its use. And while I maintain that it’s still the most complete database of its kind, its contributors are not always on point. While browsing around I found that Petre Inspirescu’s Pedro moniker had a new release on the Swiss net label, Acid Milk Recordings. I was shocked how different it sounded from his better known “Tips” 2×12″ on Cadenza or the whirring percussion fest that is “Sakadat.” But as
This is a totally different pedro thats why its electro.

That would explain a lot! I guess you can’t always trust Discogs. Thanks for the head’s up.
This track aches for that slow burn build-up and release structure of say, one of Dusty Kid’s tracks. Still a fine track. It’s a difficult task to combine the atmosphere of techno and minimal with the more “ravey” aspects of electro. I think this track accomplishes that, though I wish it didn’t sound like an edit.
In hindsight, my main producing goal of 2007 was to create a blend of the “techno”, “minimal” and “electro” sound without falling to far into either camp. Whether or not I accomplished that goal as well as Pedro does here is anyone’s guess…

that photo is fucking amazing!
you don’t have any info on the photographer/locale or anything do you? looks like it’s in southeast asia?
I wish I did. The Internet is cruel when it comes to handing out attribution, even when you seek it out.
