01. Kevin Reynolds, “Liaisons” [Nsyde Music] (buy)
Listening to Liaisons, the newest record from Kevin Reynolds, it’s somewhat difficult to believe this is the same Detroit producer who put out Favis earlier this year. Not only is it a far leap from the loose, organically flavored style of his previous work, it’s a huge jump in quality as well. The title track sounds like he’s been marinating in the influence of Kassem Mosse (with whom Reynolds shared a bill in Chicago earlier this year), as it weds slamming yet intricate drum patterning with fundamentally appealing melodies. The hum of heavy metal doors sliding together sets the tone as oil barrel drums set the pace — deliberate but invigorating. A long, webbed synth progression springs from the shuffling drums, growing new leads and spurring the hi-hat patterns below to get more ambitious. It offers a feeling of peace withing the cacophony of life around us, a cue to find the beauty among the rote patterns of daily living, a chance to make even those humdrum moments more interesting. You could call it the younger cousin of Mosse’s Laid-released “Untitled,” one that’s learned from its raw, iconic forebear and wants to try cutting a similar path for itself. Good on Nsyde for scooping up this unexpected delight; better on Reynolds for taking the strides that caught their attention.

02. Dijkhuis, “Salt Caramel” [Night Gallery] (buy)
While the first release on Night Gallery brought Dijkhuis to listeners’ attention, it’s their second release together that’s likely to solidify their respective fan bases. It was difficult to choose a favorite track on this record because each is so strong in its own way, but “Salt Caramel” wins the spot by a nose. With its complex arrangements and brightly colored synth elements it could easily pass as a Recloose track, which I tend to think of as a high compliment. The sizzling synth progression it begins with is merely a launching pad for wriggling leads, a bass line so lively it could’ve been lifted from a p-funk record, a jittery bridge, and the sublime combination of all of the above. In the hands of a less capable producer something like this could be a cluttered mess, yet “Salt Caramel” feels effortless and pulls you along for the ride with each new addition. One might suspect we already know Dijkhuis under other names because of how accomplished this record is, but whatever you call the producer their work is too thrilling to ignore.

03. B-Tracks, “Specialize” [Supply Records] (buy)
Perhaps fittingly for a record that offers few clues as to its provenance, B-Tracks’ Specialize touches on so many reference points its sound is difficult to describe succinctly. Flitting between obtuse house, melodic techno, deep-house and booming techno, it’s a diverse package that shows its unknown creators well versed in a variety of sounds. It’s the title track, though, that most often sticks in my mind. What B-Tracks does so well is fusing together unexpected sounds to create ear-catching hybrids; so while “Specialize” incorporates techno stabs, New York house organ motifs, a cheerful and pliable bass line, and liberal doses of female vocals, “tech-house” doesn’t do it justice. The quick changes in the arrangements and introduction of unlikely samples (splashes of harmonica, anyone?) keep listeners on their toes yet feel natural and exciting. With a debut this strong and wide reaching it’s unlikely B-Tracks will stay unknown — at least as artists — very much longer.

04. Jonsson/Alter, “Hela Berget”

What I appreciate most about Jonsson and Alter’s forthcoming album, Dom, is that it contains a vintage strain of house which manages to avoid being overtly referential. While the equipment used to create it is innately old school, the duo harness it in ways that feel familiar without calling up specific memories. Although it’s a solidly compelling album throughout, “Hela Berget” stands out as one of the most floor-friendly, memorable tracks. Its spacious arrangements imbue each spartan element with greater resonance, from the gradually tumbling riff quivering under its own weight to the glittering pads which could’ve been sourced from a Tangerine Dream record. This space also affords a lightness to a track whose restrained tempo and choice of synth timbres could’ve been left it feeling heavy. The warm-up or afterhours DJ who plays “Hela Berget” at the right time should grab dancers’ attention.

05. Arkist & Kidkut, “One Year Later”
[Hotflush Recordings] (buy)
The first collaboration between Immerse Recordings labelhead Adam Jackston, aka Kidkut, and A. Gazia, aka Arkist, achieves two things: The Hotflush-released record offers the fun but forgetably standard UK house cut appropriately called “Vanilla Imitate” on side A, and an unexpectedly weighty tech-house track called “One Year Later” on side B. What lulls listeners at its start grows more demanding at the introduction of a patiently crafted bass line that compels their attention rather than demands it. It’s cloaked in gravelly organ chords and fastened together with springy percussion that pulls apart during the breakdown to free it from its loop. It calls to mind some of Andre Lodemann’s records (particularly The Vehemence of Silence) but is entirely its own thing. It’s admirable that Hotflush Recordings hosted both sides of their artists’ collaboration despite their aesthetic differences, although a tune this is good is understandably hard to let pass by.

01. Massimiliano Pagliara, “A Wrong Chance” (Tuff City Kids Remix) [Live At Robert Johnson] (buy)
Stylistically diverse and capably executed, Massimiliano Pagliara’s debut full-length, Focus For Infinity, could rank among the year’s best dance music albums. Yet for reasons I can’t quite understand, it somehow managed to be overlooked by most critics and listeners. If there’s any justice, the Live At Robert Johnson-released remix EPs will rekindle interest in the excellent originals. Perhaps the strongest argument for this is the Tuff City Kids remix of “A Wrong Chance.” The duo of Running Back impresario Gerd Janson and Arto Mwambe’s Phillip Lauer re-sculpt the tune into something tougher but equally sophisticated. Fans of Lauer’s recent work will recognize some of his signature synth sounds which provide an airy sweetness to compliment the meaty bass line which leads things off. Like the original, the remix straddles the past as it looks into the present, offering nostalgic drum programming and acid flourishes which sound fresh despite themselves. Tuff City Kids is primarily a remix outlet for Janson and Lauer, but with remixes this good one hopes they find time for some originals, too.

02. Recast, “Consensual”
[Third Ear Recordings] (buy)
Unlike actors who get typecast for playing one role for too long, electronic music producers have the luxury of putting on new masks when ready to leave behind their best known material. Such has been the case for Konstantinos Soublis, the producer best know for his records on Chain Reaction and Echocord as Fluxion. In 2011 he’s resurfaced as Recast with a new single for the always adventurous Third Ear Recordings. Whereas his dub techno material utilized a rather narrow tonal palette, “Consensual” is rife with wafting melodies primed for intense daydreaming. Its teasing intro barely prepares listeners for the full-on bear hug of melody and thick, wandering bass that greets them and further intensifies. While clearly not the focus of the piece, the percussion in “Consensual” is obviously labored over as well, from rolling kicks, tense string plucks, a light dusting of shakers and cascading hi-hats that change up as if driving through different weather patterns. Immense and ambitious, it will be interesting to see how far Soublis takes Recast after “Consensual” before finding a new mask to wear.

03. Archie Pelago, “Rude Panecea”
[Slime Recordings] (buy)
Drawing upon jazz for samples and inspiration is still a relatively new thing for bass music types, so the prospect of a nominal jazz trio making bass music is honestly difficult to wrap one’s head around. In fact, it sounds like the kind of thing that really shouldn’t work. The Brooklyn-based trio Archie Pelago, however, is proving such preconceptions to be misjudged. Case in point, “Rude Panacea” from their Chocolate Waveplates EP for Slime Recordings: a rambunctious, synth-rooted romp through organic instrumentation that could score a Road Runner cartoon as easily as bring down the house during one of their live performances. Sax, trumpet and cello spar with the razor-backed synth lines that skitter and roar across nimble arrangements that feel delicately composed but powerful enough to inspire sincere head rocking. It’s immensely satisfying for something that could go so horribly wrong to end up so right. I can hardly wait to find out what other preconceived notions of mine they end up shattering.

04. Benjamin Brunn, “I Took Her Out For a 707″ [Ashes] (buy)
“I Took Her Out For A 707,” the lead track from Benjamin Brunn’s Dust EP for the newly launched Ashes imprint, can be described simply as minimalist. Note that it’s not minimal (whether or not you take that word pejoratively), but it relies on a only a few elements to make its immaculate point. Brunn wrings out a great of substance from its iridescent synth line by toying with the attack and sustain, leaving the melody largely unchanged even as it strikes different poses. The trotting 707 and a diffused clap generally hold their shape as well, only occasionally shifting their patterns to match the changes in synth intensity. But it’s the bass line, shimmying down the scale, that completes the track, taking it beyond the “session experiment” sound a piece this compact might suffer from otherwise. “I Took Her Out For A 707″ is no opus, but it’s an example of just how much Brunn can accomplish with a limited toolkit.

05. El Kid, “112″ [Immerse Records] (buy)
Not only has the slow down in bass music tempos been useful for DJs looking to integrate it into their house/techno sets, it’s a boon to the overall genre itself. Rather than turn into the kind of musical arms race that helped make jungle/drum n’ bass practically irrelevant, this has allowed DJs to find new, interesting patterns with all the space afforded by tempos that jog rather than sprint. Immerse Records has done a good job of finding talent who dabble in the slower end of things, and their latest signing, El Kid, is among the most promising. With “112,” the Brighton-based producer has created something that feels compatible with but unrecognizable as house. The tune mines much of the same tonal territory as his compatriot BNJMN, although the broken beat patterns below the glossy melodies provide a distinctly different flavor. The same can be said the off-hand percussion elements littered throughout, affording texture to otherwise clean sounds. With a debut this distinctive and versatile, El Kid seems like a producer worth monitoring closely.

Whether there’s a narrative in the trajectory of dance music in 2009 is open for interpretation and snide remarks, but even a cursory glance at the lists compiled LWE’s staff suggests this year’s been full of excellent music. The most mentioned by far is STL’s nuance-filled “Silent State,” with various cuts from Ben Klock and Black Jazz Consortium following behind. Peter Van Hoesen’s “Attribute One” and album tracks from Martyn’s Great Lengths were also well represented. What made your top 10 list? What did we overlook? Record nerds of the world are greeted daily by news of the music industry’s impending doom. Yet record labels — in dance music, at least — have refused to fade away. All profitability aside, might the concept of the record label in 2009 be as strong as it’s ever been? As record stores continue closing at an alarming rate (Manhattan’s Etherea Records, one of my personal favorite spots for dance vinyl, shuttered this past February), there exist less shelf space for the familiar sleeve designs and logos of your favorite imprints to stare down enticingly at you. But in this digital era, where dance music is more easily disseminated than ever before, the filter of a reputable record label has taken on supreme importance in separating wheat from chaff. Tellingly, some of 2009′s most exciting labels have de-emphasized genre affiliation in favor of amping up their reputation for quality output. Others, realizing how quickly novel sounds can weave their way through the scene via the blogosphere (ahem), are starting labels as incubators for daring new tracks that might not have found an outlet otherwise. And despite the seemingly endless tide of new music gushing through the cracks of record bags and hard drives, some of the best labels have resisted the urge to flood the market with their brand, releasing only the choicest of cuts.

This list of 2009’s best record labels so far, in no particular order and in no way definitive, showcases some of modern dance music’s most interesting and innovative wellsprings for grade-A music. The prophecy may continue to foretell the industry’s gory death, but as best as I can tell, the record label lives on!

Hyperdub

You knew you’d find this here. Kode9′s coterie of Flying Lotus eaters has had one hell of a run in 2009 so far, with each release catching anyone who thought they had this London-based label’s sound pigeonholed as dubstep completely off-guard. From the autotuned wonky-n’-blues of 2000F & J Kamata’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is” to The Bug’s slow-mo electronic dub of his second King Midas Sound 10″ to LD’s gorgeously tense “Traumatic Times,” Hyperdub has displayed a deftness at rendering relatively disparate sounds cohesive. Cooly G, who recently released her debut 12” on the label, might be its mightiest A&R snag since Burial (or at least Zomby), and her poker-faced funky house constitutes yet another hard left turn that somehow makes a whole lot of sense.

Do Not Resist the Beat!

Ostgut-Ton and the Berghain crew might be the torchbearers of the purist techno underground, but they’re hardly the only ones throwing down brutally to-the-point 4/4. Of all the hand-stamped labels hotly-tipped by Berlin’s Hardwax record store, Milton Bradley’s and DJ Zeal’s Do Not Resist The Beat! imprint has its ears trained most strongly towards techno’s future. (Frozen Border, whoever you are: you’re a very close second.) Milton Bradley’s three 12″s for the label this year — murky, bubbling stews equal parts “Classics”-era Aphex Twin, Marcel Dettmann, and Shackleton — have each built impressively upon each other. As more of the world heeds the label’s namesake request, these small-batch slabs are sure to become tough catches for record collectors. Grab ‘em while they’re hot!

Apple Pips

Like Hyperdub, Apple Pips has spent 2009 showing us that dubstep is literally only one side of the story. While Ramadanman — once solo and in collaboration with labelhead Appleblim — has stayed true to the bass, dub savant Sven Weisemann and Aus/Simple’s Will Saul & Mike Monday have contributed pitched-down, unexpected reworks on the flips. One imagines the production process was an educational one for all involved. Yet Appleblim’s alchemical A&R this year has given us more than just interesting cross-genre pairings. White-hot Londoner Brackles contributed “Get A Job/Lizards,” melding Joker keyboards and Untold’s rhythmic absurdity into pure subs-driven gold. It’s enough to make you forget, at least momentarily, Skull Disco’s untimely demise and join the throngs of us anxiously awaiting Pips’ next sure-to-be-slamming transmission.

Cómeme

I have no idea what a BumBumBox party must be like — YouTube suggests something like a reggaeton-themed bar mitzvah held in a parking garage. But judging by the output of this new imprint from Kompakt’s Matías Aguayo, the kingpin of those guerilla lo-fi mini-raves, it must give deep house purists one serious collective nosebleed. Cómeme finds Aguayo and a cast of unknowns filtering an M.I.A.-like mélange of global street music, underground UK house percussion, and ‘80s pop through the Latin-minimal songbook. Despite (or perhaps because of) never taking itself too seriously, the label’s three sugar-coated releases have been some of 2009′s most original — or, if you prefer, most unhinged — club tracks. Assuming they stay as fresh as they sound right now, Aguayo’s near-”I Want Candy” cover “Bo Jack” and smooth-rapping “Pata Pata” will undoubtedly keep the world’s conga-lines a-chuggin’ (and haters hatin’) through the year’s end.

Smallville Records

Smallville has not been terribly prolific in 2009, but I’ll be damned if its two 12″s this year haven’t been stone-cold classics. LWE has already heaped praise on STL’s modulating epic “Silent State,” and it’s hard to imagine a more subtle and supple house record dropping this year. Like some lost Fennesz-Basic Channel collab, Stephan Laubner’s rare departure from his own Something label bathes your brain in heavy dub while insistent hi-hats keep you pinned to the dance floor. Steinhoff & Hammouda’s recently released “Touch,” a Lawrence-style deep percussion jam as awesome as any of the tougher sides found in Smallville’s impressive back catalog, is no slouch at working crowds either. But it’s the B-side, a Jus-Ed remix of the duo’s 2008 track “You Are,” that should excite house heads most. With that producer’s Underground Quality imprint and his associates making some of the strangest deep music around as of late, the potential for more tunes on the Hamburg-New York axis should be cause for much salivation indeed.

01. Black Jazz Consortium, “Whats Up With the Love” [Soul People Music] (buy)
Fred P brings Structure, his second album as Black Jazz Consortium, to a close with the question, “What’s up with the love that you’re giving me?” Without any other lyrics to provide context for who he’s asking or why, listeners are left to drawn their own conclusions on the basis of the luscious instrumental sweeping beneath Fred’s filtered vocals. Sustained minor chords hover like looming interpersonal tension and interlock with a doleful synth progression to create sensual new harmonics. Whether it’s a significant other, family member, friend or fan he’s questioning, Fred seems resigned to reality and pours his feelings into this personally resonating tune. Perhaps his next album will provide an answer. In the meantime, show him some love and pick up this spectacular album.

02. Planetary Assault Systems, “Temporary Suspension” [Ostgut Tonträger] (buy)
2009 seems like a year in which techno will pound dancers into the ground like rows of nails, and “Temporary Suspension,” the first single from Planetary Assault Systems’ new album of the same name, seems a likely hammer of choice for many DJs. Constantly intensifying and reshaping an oft bludgeoned note, Slater uses it to batter a synthetic bees’ nest, grinning with maniacal glee as they exit the hive to invade the stereo spectrum, stingers poised. Despite its simple aims, you can tell “Temporary Suspension” was meticulously labored over for maximum impact, from the use of space to the tightly assembled blitz of percussion. We expect this track to ignite many a dance floor this summer.

03. 100 Hz, “Tension” [Bosconi Records] (buy)
Given the many gaps between their successive records and dance music’s long held propensity for focusing only on latest releases, it’s only somewhat surprising 100 Hz isn’t better known. That hasn’t stopped them from turning out quality house tunes when they do arrive, and 2009 looks set to host another prolific cycle. As with many 100 Hz tracks, “Tension” (from their Bosconi Records-released “Mila EP”) is briskly paced and laden with live vocals (while sampling the end bits of Peech Boys’ “Don’t Make Me Wait”). Its melodies streak by like headlights at night and on film, underpinned by an assertive bass riff and techy arpeggios. So while “Tension” is certainly a product of its time, one can’t help but hear 90′s motifs comparable to the ones the group used during its first heyday. If they keep turning out tracks like this, a second heyday may be in order.

04. Peter Kruder, “Visions Ltd.”

Most folks remember Peter Kruder as half of the legendary downtempo duo Kruder & Dorfmeister or one third of the Voom:Voom power trio with Cristian Prommer and Roland Appel. But if Kruder has his way, a slew of new records, starting with “Visions Ltd.,” will underline his solo production prowess. The A side makes floor-filling sense of a diverse web of elements — divebombing synth lines, a fluttering flock of flute licks, shimmering strings and bounding tom patterns — as only experienced hands could. Simultaneously hard charging and sensually detailed, “Visions Ltd.” proves there’s much more to Kruder than his past. Next up, a quality 12″ for Stefan Goldmann’s Macro label.

05. Dapayk & Padberg, “Sugar” [Fenou] (buy)
Some people have a sweet tooth, others crave the savory, but combining those two flavors often draws admirers from both camps. “Sugar,” the first new solo record from Dapayk & Padberg since their hit 2007 album, Black Beauty, falls into the latter most category. This syrupy, romantic jam, in which Padberg encourages her man to take care of himself, too, is garnished with surprisingly minor vocal kernals that set it apart from most house tracks of this nature. The contrast provides a great counterweight to the silky blanket of electric piano trimmed with incisive viola runs and her coy delivery, which might otherwise make it too precious. Add an unexpected dash of sweet/savory to your sets, that is, if you can find one of the 500 copies of this limited 10″ from Fenou.

What more can we say? EP of the year so far?

We’re starting to believe DJ Koze is giving Ricardo Villalobos a run for his money as techno/house’s most beloved auteur. He’s an irrepressible force always undermining the boundaries of dance music and electronic music more generally, often busting out in inexplicably appealing ways. His remix of Ben Watt’s “Guinea Pig” is similarly alluring, a tangled narrative of unstable vocals, shuddering snare hits, lucid marimba notes, disconnected phone numbers and a pumping arpeggio, all held together by the sheer quality of its disparate parts. DJ Koze’s music is so unabashedly original yet ultimately accessible, and each new release only furthers that reputation.

03. John Daly, “This Is A Lonely Beat”
[Drumpoet Community] (buy)
Had we not known it was John Daly’s work when “This Is A Lonely Beat” poured from the PA, we wouldn’t have believed it. His productions are almost always melodically bountiful but rarely outright poppy, which is what he achieves for Drumpoet Community. In fact the only thing that gives him away is the subtle dub iterations ringing the hypnotic churning riff. Otherwise we migh’ve suspected a long forgotten French house master was behind the jittery vocal snippets, snug and chugging percussion and gregarious bass line. And try as we might, masks and all, John Daly’s newest is too infectious to resist.

04. Boris Hotton, “Bon Voyage”
[Troubled Kids Records] (buy)
Boris Hotton has been lurking around techno and house since 2005, but it wasn’t until his remix of Sven Weisemann’s “Slices” for liebe*detail spezial that he gained any visibility. He makes his solo debut on the similarly nascent Troubled Kids Records, and his two originals manage to best remixes from Motorcitysoul and Jesus Gonsev. The sultry “Bon Voyage” is tops in our book, even though it traffics in many “deep house” tropes that have grown vastly overused. Yet his arrangements are more complex and heartwarming, like the way he drapes a vocal over the hardened drums, the way his synth lines and string progressions sweep over the dance floor like a sudden flush of emotion. “Bon Voyage” is unlikely to end up Hotton’s calling card, but it bodes well for future releases and will nicely round out deeper DJ sets.

05. Gruber & Nurnberg, “Traffic” (Agnès remix)
[Bloop Recordings] (buy)
What’s incredible about Agnès’ remixes isn’t just their reliable quality, but how much musical DNA they share regardless of the source material. It’s as if he’s turned his Swiss studio into a factory where the top sellers are elastic synth stabs, billowing pads and segmented diva vocal samples. But for all the homogeny, I’ve yet to find an Agnès remix unremarkable; his version of Gruber & Nurnberg’s “Traffic” is latest to follow the trend. The pinching ancillary percussion spinning cobwebs between solid house rhythms recalls Around the House-era Herbert — a great set of touchstones — and helps an otherwise by-the-numbers remix stand out. Here’s hoping this is one factory the global economy won’t cause to shutter.

06. Dplay, “Huub Sand” [Running Back] (buy)
Until now, Dplay only hit our radar when his star was hitched with Manuel Tur’s, but his ambitious new EP for Running Back suggests he’s a force to be reckoned with even solo. Rounding out a rather diverse and at times unusual release, the title track distills all Dplay’s personality into a simpler structure. Smooth and sober without plodding, its eight minutes are covered with the sheen of humming pads, rolling along at the behest of pneumatic percussion and a pulpy two-fingered progression. For the third And Charts For All we decided to experiment with a different method of tallying to see how it would impact the results. We opted to lump together votes for different tracks on the same release rather than keep them apart, which could provide a better picture of what releases are popular if not which tracks. We welcome your feedback on our methods and any suggestions for the future. Now on to the results.

This month featured the most clear cut winner since these polls started, with newcomer Culoe de Song’s “The Bright Forest” trouncing its competition. Voters appear to agree with us that STL’s “Silent State” (#2) is already a year’s best contender, and is followed by another — Martyn’s stunning Great Lengths. Both sides of “Berghain 03|Part 1″ captured top 10 spots so we left them separate. New singles from Ame, LoSoul, and Donnacha Costello placed well, and voters vocally supported “Clapper” by Tobias Freund while our reviewer’s feelings were more tepid. Jitterbug’s debut EP (#7) seems a hit; as does Ramadanman’s Apple Pips 12″ (#8). There were two real surprises: First, only Stefan Goldmann’s “Art Of Sorrow” hung on from last month’s charts, which seems an indication of its staying power. Second, Anton Zap’s Uzuri EP and a Patrice Bäumel remix of Bomb the Bass managed to sneak into the top 20 despite being technically unreleased; the Internet is powerful with these ones.

And Charts For All February

In the month since we debuted And Charts For All there’s been an interesting turnover of favorites, pushing many of last month’s top 20 either down or off the charts. One which bucked the trend and moved up is La Peña’s “Free From Love,” with Joker’s “Digidesign” and the “MDR 05″ EP from Norman Nodge just barely hanging on. March was a great month for free tracks as Audion’s self-released “I Am the Car” claimed the top spot and the LWE-distributed “The Spitzer Group” from DJ Koze landing at number six. Dubstep is also especially well represented this month: Kode9 captured #3, and Martyn’s Shed remix and “Yet” for Tectonic, Pangea and Joker all ranking. Isolee’s Diynamic revival and Mountain People’s return to melody also scored quite high, as did Stefan Goldmann’s club-storming “Art of Sorrow” and Prins Thomas’ “Mammut” single. Cadenza’s long awaited return to releasing 12s” was understandably popular: Michel Cleis scored the eighth spot and Argenis Brito’s “Lolipop” just missed the cutoff. But March’s biggest surprise is how quickly Ben Klock fell off the charts; while a few album tracks received votes, none nabbed enough to make the top 20.

We urge you to tell your friends, enemies and frenemies about And Charts For All to make next month’s results an even bigger success. The more people who contribute the more accurate our polls will be. We’re going to encourage our DJ friends to send in their charts; we hope you do the same. Oh, and one last fiddly thing: These charts are for TRACKS ONLY, not full releases. LWE wants to ensure we get your tastes right, and listing a full EP means we often end up guessing. Keep that in mind and we’ll all be fine.

Only four releases into their existence, the Swiss label/collective Contentismissing has quickly become a reliable source for eclectic techno slates bearing thought-provoking artwork. Their latest, “24h,” rounds up tracks from Rene Breitbarth, Buttha, Hofuku Sochi and St. Plomb, whose “Flight Back” is the clear standout. Amid glistening pads and hitched up hats a juicy organ progression sloshes from side to side, threatening to splash over the sides as the track intensifies. An essential gear from this often reserved producer.

02. Audio Werner, “Easygoing”
[Hartchef Discos] (buy)
Two years after his “Flat Funk” slunk its way into many DJs’ crates, Audio Werner has returned with a new 12″ for the underrated Hartchef Discos. “Easygoing” is well positioned to please the new wave of ‘heads cottoning on to Werner’s script-flipping house sound, feeling like a follow up to 2005′s “Still Jackin’.” Its minor stabs balance nimbly on skinny legs, laying out the palate for Werner to smear into longer melodies. Although the understated bass line comes as a surprise, Werner’s glib vocal samples and endless minute tweaks are sure to keep listeners on their feet.

03. Glimpse, “Drifting” (C2 Deep Mix) [Planet E] (buy)
Sometimes we think Carl Craig signs tracks to Planet E because he sees their innate potential as fodder for his signature remixes. Now we can add prolific producer Glimpse to Martin Buttrich and Sebastien San as producers whose like-minded Planet E tunes provided C2 with the kit for something much larger. Both of his versions are unhinged to better swallow the dance floor, metallic jaws crunching down on simmering percussion, ostinato drones and roiling acid vamps. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but the “Deep Mix” has a raw bite that can’t be beat.

04. Spencer Parker, “Untitled Head”
[liebe*detail] (buy)
Fitting vocal snippets into techno mosaics is hardly a new production technique but it’s seen a big resurgence in the last year with varying degrees of success. One of the better examples, Spencer Parker’s “Untitled Head,” is found on liebe*detail’s latest platter. By grooming and programming mono syllabic vocal samples, Parker creates the illusion of a plucked guitar riff darting between thick tom runs. Its outward simplicity makes its infectious groove even more contagious and dangerous in the hands of DJs. We look forward to more from Mr. Parker.

05. David K, “73 Tomtom Avenue” (Jimpster remix) [Tsuba Records] (buy)
Speaking of tracks focusing on vocal samples, “73 Tomtom Avenue” by David K and remixed by Jimpster offers a more traditional and equally enjoyable take on the tactic. Ever the reliable and insatiable remixer, Jimpster wedges the original’s strengths into his wheelhouse of deep, melodic house. More in the mold of Ron Trent and Chez Damier, the tune dribbles a beatboxed sample like a basketball cloaked in dubbed out melodies and stretched strings. And while Jimpster avoids taking many risks, dancers and DJs alike will revel in its consistent good vibes and surprisingly fresh execution.

Versatility is one of Brendon Moeller’s strong suits, freeing his sound to bend and shift to fit the label on which it’s released. The club-moving vigor of “The Big Thrill,” his latest, is perfectly suited to its surroundings at Connaisseur Supérieur and ranks among the imprint’s best releases. Turning dub’s reverberations inside out to glide freely across a skyline of ostinato stabs, balmy bass and eyebrow-raising zip noises, Moeller exhibits how he’s able to stay one big step ahead of many of his peers in dub techno. Even more impressive than his club-friendly 12″ for Leena Music, “The Big Thrill” is a must have.

02. Juju & Jordash, “Same Ol’ Day” [Juju Music] (buy)
Not ones to blend in with current trends, Amsterdam’s Juju & Jordash are always good for a taste of the unexpected. And though their latest is entitled “Same Ol’ Day,” listeners may have difficulties hearing where it fits among today’s deep house scene. The tune aims for the stars created by an iridescent layer of oscillating synths, and is dominated by two intertwined (and surprisingly engaging) saxophone runs playing tag with flute ripostes and tasteful slap bass. While the extended beatless midsection might put off some DJs, Juju & Jordash have created a beautiful and expressive soundscape that leaves the dance floor grabbing for its patrons’ floating feet.

03. Will Saul & Mike Monday, “Zippo” [Buzzin' Fly] (buy)
Simple/Aus Music manager, Will Saul, is a known frequent collaborator, and his new partnership with aural prankster Mike Monday on Buzzin’ Fly is both unexpected and delightful. “Zippo” starts unassuming enough as a bleep-pocked, tech-house beat prepares the ground work. Just then, an exceptionally colorful progression ripples just below the surface and travels around the stereo channels. Filling the air with joyful wonder, “Zippo” goes for grins as a rounded ostinato progression creeps forward in the mix. There’s more than a bit of escapism in Saul and Monday’s gorgeous creation, and frankly that’s what many of us need these days.

04. Danilo Schneider, “Ungeduld” [Brouqade Records] (buy)
Although relative newcomer Danilo Schneider is only an unknown quantity at present, his debut 12″ on Broquade will surely help carve out his own identity as a producer. “Deep Down” and its attendant remix by Guido Schneider are serviceable, yet they pale in comparison to the understated power of “Ungeduld” on the flip. If its length and slow build seem at odds with the title (which translates as “impatience”), listeners’ rewards for persistence -– backbeat synth flares, clave punctuation, off-handed snare hits and trembling Rhodes chords, -– suggest what Schneider is warning against.

05. Even Tuell, “Untitled A1″ [Workshop] (buy)
Expectations are high for Paul David Rollmann, better known as Even Tuell, after his first Workshop platter found its way into many a DJ’s crate and on Âme’s Fabric mix. His sure handed sound design adds alluring dimensions when paired with sparer tracks and stands well on its own, too, especially at home. More conventional structures are the most marked difference of “Workshop 07,” but Tuell’s focus on finely crafted timbres remains unscathed. As noted by the oft-repeated (for better or worse) “Detroit” vocal sample, “Untitled A1″ pays homage while remaining its own beast, stitching together a tight web of simple melodies around vintage-sounding drum programming. “Workshop 07″ finds Even Tuell’s forward momentum carrying him in a promising new direction.
