Tejada’s attempts to balance technical structuring with a rich musicality he inherited from his classical musician parents has have resulted in an identifiable sound that has informed his work under a number of guises and styles. Be it the funky turn on deep house that was “Timebomb,” the moody minimalism of “Mono On Mono” or the techno mutations with frequent partner Arian Leviste (to name just a few), Tejada has typically infused his material with melodic sensibilities that function on several levels.

Since its inception his Palette label has focused primarily on techno but over recent years has concentrated on the tracky form of the genre. Tejada’s own work has veered towards that same path at times, with several releases that bore more than a passing resemblance to new school minimal. But 2009 has seen a return to the form of old. This year’s earlier release by Tejada, “Fractals,” affirmed an interest in re-exploring overtly melodic themes with nods to early UK techno and even a jungle reference peaking its head through the techno rhythms. Tejada’s latest, “Vertex,” finds him reaching for a similar trajectory while also keeping the dance floor in his sights.

“Liquid Mirror” checks in with stylistic shiftiness, moving from tinderbox melodies and delayed 808 percussion to swirling techno arpeggio loops and meaty electro bass that give the track a welcoming depth. On “The Locus Of Points” Tejada goes for the jugular by taking a dark synth vamp and surrounding it with razor sharp drum sounds and programming to milk it for all its worth. And if you needed proof of Tejada’s passion for the technical aspects of his gear you only need look at “P.L.L.,” named for the phase locked loop process. He utilizes it here to create a series of shifting bleep patterns that serve as the track’s anchor alongside a sturdy kick and juiced hi-hats. But what starts out as an exercise in monochrome techno is buoyed by delayed synth stabs that cut the tension and lend warmth. The title track may be the only misstep. Its modulated synth loop runs throughout augmented by a two-note sub-bass rumble and an occasional pad, never amounting to much more than a Soundhack derivation. All in all, though, a solid release from Tejada that shows there’s still life in those machines of his.

Little White Earbuds July Charts

chart

james ruskin

jimpster

john tejada

margaret dygas

tensnake
<guid

Following on his incredible “In the End (I Want You to Cry)” for Running Back, Tensnake reshapes Toby Tobias’ “In Your Eyes” to fit his neon-lit disco template. Full of popping bass lines, colorful whooshes and pitched down vocals, all heard through a fluttering delay, the tune is instantly recognizable as a Tensnake production and benefits great from his lighthearted moods. Here’s hoping he can find it in himself to keep the ball of fine releases rolling.

02. John Tejada, “Liquid Mirror”
[Palette Recordings] (<a

Tuneful and moving without lapsing into excess, “Liquid Mirror” is as much a full blown song as a DJ’s instrument.

03. Margaret Dygas, “Frankly”<br

Her “Invisible Circles” 12″ for Perlon will only add to that stature: a bold two tracker whose title track sketches out a haunting outline of dubstep in an ectoplasmic form, and a more functional yet still wide-eyed B side, “Frankly.” Palpable dread hovers like a storm cloud over impeccably programmed percussion as the lengthy track winds it way through flamenco guitar motifs, sneering trumpet licks and a patchwork of unearthed souls. If her current trajectory holds, Dygas will soon join Pronsato and Villalobos on the cusp of outré techno.

04. James Ruskin, “Sabre”
[Blueprint] ( Many artists who stay in the game long enough find their work comes back into fashion as successive new generations learn about the old. London’s James Ruskin, founder of the Blueprint label, has watched the tide come and go since 1991; and these days the style of gruff, pounding techno he’s been caning ever since has returned to prominence. DJs have taken note of his new O/V/R project with Karl O’Connor, though his solo “Sabre/Massk” EP deserves an even closer look. “Sabre” demonstrates the completeness of Ruskin’s command of his gear, flinging a thrumming sample around the stereo channels before constraining it in a cage of stony kicks and astringent percussion. It’s the sort of sound design we’ve come to expect from Marcel Dettmann and Norman Nodge with fewer restrictions. Not bad for scene veteran, eh?

05. Jimpster, “Just the Kind of Girl”
[Freerange Records] (buy)
Although Freerange Records’ releases and his remixes are legion, Jimpster tends to be rather selective about his solo work. This usually means his tunes are worth hearing and that DJs and fans alike chime in with support. Perhaps anticipating a low key reception, Jimpster named his latest “Sleeper” and watched the EP slide under the radar. This is a shame in our estimation, not least because B side “Just The Kind of Girl” is both at home in the current milieu and a head above its peers. A clipped horn ostinato pierces, then reverberates in aquamarine tone pools coating the floor, culminating in moody breakdowns and fiercer riffs. So adept is Jimpster at developing a sublime atmosphere that we’re willing to overlook the tortured vocals crowing the title in the latter half. Certainly not one to sleep on.

06. packed with poppy cuts and mixed with CDs/Ableton — had stained his legendary status, one post stood out to me. The author reminded the participants that Saunderson’s long career took place both above ground and underground, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise for him to select from both realms. For me, this thought fits nicely with his choice to reintroduce fans to his musical peaks with three remix 12″s, when he could have easily just re-pressed his best and assumed others would put together the pieces. Saunderson reached out to others to give fans what they really wanted: something fresh, relevant and celebratory of dance music’s watershed moments, grumbling Detroit-centrics be damned. Now Mathew Jonson and John Tejada have followed the footsteps of Joris Voorn, Carl Craig, Samuel L Session and Loco Dice in taking on two classic KMS tunes.

Wagon Repair head honcho, Mathew Jonson, had the un/enviable task of reworking Inner City’s “Good Life,” one of house music’s best known tunes. Rather than deal with all that baggage, Jonson reached for his 303 collection and jumped in an acid bath, leaving only Paris Grey’s sultry vocals bobbing above the surface. The slinky, coiled nature of Jonson’s corrosive progressions lock tightly into Grey’s bouncy and filtered pipes, an odd yet pleasing combination. And because it avoids 2008′s current trends, MJ’s rework might actually avoid sounding dated. By contrast, John Tejada’s grumbling revision of Reese’s “Just Want Another Chance” already sounds like it belongs in 2006-7. Its main gruff, four note groove and plinking synth lead call to mind Stephan Bodzin and Border Community’s signature growls. Perhaps this trait has long since been attributed to Tejada, but to the unfamiliar it feels like old news. Something tells me Saunderson probably doesn’t mind.
