A hearty thanks to each of you who put your time, effort and taste into these mixes. This is our last post of 2008, so happy New Year in advance. We’ll be back to a regular posting schedule on January 5th, 2009.

And now, the time has come for us to announce the winner of our first annual podcast mix competition… after the jump.

Congratulations, Andrey Radovski, your excellent mix received the highest score as rated by our panel of seven judges and you are our 12th podcast curator. In second place, Hendrick Mitchell, aka Thelonious Funk; third place goes to DJ L’embrouille. Each will receive a prize pack courtesy of NRK Sound Division. So let’s move on to LWE Podcast 12:

We’re proud to introduce the 12th LWE podcast — the last one of 2008 and winner of our competition. This mix comes to us from Andrey Radovski — a Minsk, Belarus native and current Brooklyn, NYC resident. Radovski is a resident DJ of the Funimal House monthly at Monkey Town in Williamsburg. His set, entitled “Crack Is Destiny,” impressed us with its deft pacing and technique, natural transitions and arrangements, and deep and relevant selections. Slinking across Detroit house, Spanish grooves, tribal rhythms and closing with the mind-elevating sounds of Kerri Chandler, Radovski’s mix exemplifies what we were looking for in this competition. Better still, it keeps us coming back for more even after we’d overdosed on mixes. Kudos to Andrey; check him out live if you have the chance.

LWE Podcast 12: Andrey Radovski (46:38)

The diligent trainspotters out there will be aware of you under a previous guise as Peak:shift. You kind of resurfaced after what seemed like a bit of a break from releasing, but now under your real name (if Simon Flower is your real name). Why the name change?

Simon Flower: Well sure, “Flower” would be a great stage name if this was 1968! So it couldn’t be anything but my real name. Not quite sure why I stopped using Peak:shift, just seemed to feel right at the time. I think I first started using Peak:shift when I was about 20 years old, which is a while ago now… although I guess in my mind I also connect it to the deeper music I made at that time, so it’ll definitely come out again sometime soon.

Your style has really changed, or perhaps one would say evolved from your earlier work, which was much deeper. You tend to go for more of a dance floor feel these days. What’s moved you to go in this direction?

Nothing momentous really, I think I just got better at it! Writing deeper or more melancholy music comes pretty naturally, and is still my true love. I’ve always loved and DJed more upfront dance music, especially techno, but never thought my own output was good enough. I’ve certainly worked at it. Even so, I think in most of my tracks that have been released over the last couple of years I’ve managed to sneak some deep tones in there, especially with my sometimes obsessively annoying penchant for strings.

People are usually incredulous that you produce everything solely in Reason. Tell us about your special affinity with this software, and whether you’re curious to try out any other DAW’s.

Haha, yeah, I get this a lot! Even more so when people see me using it to play live — which honestly I don’t really get. Reason is surely is the most “live” of all the DAWs, in that it is simply a virtual hardware studio and runs as such. As for the others, I think all DAWs are amazing; Reaktor and Ableton are stunning, but like any instrument you have to find the one which suits you most, and for me it simply comes down to work flow. Coming from a background growing up in the immediacy of a hardware studio, I connect pretty seamlessly with Reason. I don’t need to spend much time mucking around with the “computer” side of things.

You’re releasing mostly on German labels, but are currently residing in New Zealand. Are you tempted to join the Berlin camp of immigrant producers?

Yep, certainly have been tempted; and if I didn’t have the chance I currently have to play regularly throughout Europe then I would probably consider it much more seriously. But I think at heart I’m happiest here living a pretty chill life and making tunes. Also, sometimes making music far removed from any big music scene can have it’s advantages (or at least I tell myself that when I’m feeling jealous).

You’ve been focusing mainly on producing for the last five years or so, but have been a DJ for a long time previously. How was it putting the mix together and what did you use to do it?

Yeah, I hadn’t really DJed for years, and my last mix CD was actually from about 2002. But I’ve really had the bug back in the last 6 months or so. Really buzzing on doing stupidly long mixes, and tried to get some of that into this mix. For example, the creative spark for this mix really came about from how much I loved how Hood’s and Treshor’s tracks could rock together for such a long time. I did it in Traktor with two decks using my Edirol controller keyboard to control things — nothing tricky (just volume and high pass filter) — and with as smooth mixes as possible, as I wanted the focus to be completely on all these amazing tracks.

Who are your favorite producers and recent discoveries right now? Actually, care to make us a top 10?

I think like a lot of other people I’m pretty much enamored with the sound of Berghain/Ostgut Ton related artists at the moment, especially Shed, Marcel Dettmann, Radio Slave etc. For an old school techno head like me this is an exciting development in the sound, to my ears equal parts referential, emotive and forward thinking. Apart from this, there are really are just loads of artists. To my ears there is more great music surfacing now than I’ve heard in years. Anyhoo, here’s a current top 10, tracks in no particular order.

Andi Numan, “Glass Roots” [Curl Curl]

When and where did you make the mix?

Pär Grindvik: I recorded this mix in our combine bed/work/studio room in Berlin.

What’s the concept behind the mix?

I meant to come up with a well carved concept for this mix, as LWE and its podcast section means a lot to me! But suddenly time was gone and I just recorded it on the fly, grabbing some older favorites from the shelter that I’ve been thinking of lately and upon that I tried out new music that I received recently from some of the artists on our labels. I think that it turned out great and I would say that it continues a collection of music that inspire me right now, that’s why it’s called “Inspiration Take I” That and the fact that “Inspiration Take” sounds so Jamaican and dub. just as this mix turned out — bass, drums and a huge amount of reverbs and delays.

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

These are favorites right now:
Seth Troxler: It feels like he is the new Lil’ Louis. Romance and faith, love the way he collects gems from past and plays them with future sound of Seth. Cassy, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, actually everybody at Berghain I would say. Having a coffee or a shot listening to any of the residents is a great start for a Sunday. Otherwise I love listening to podcasts like LWE, Beats In Space, Lazpod and the Bunker Podcast from New York.

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

I will try to get some studio time in between all the traveling and label work. However, I have some remixes in the pipe line, one interpretation of Seth Troxler’s masterpiece “Love Never Sleeps” on Crosstown Rebels, the original is easily one of my favorite songs this year. Then I have one remix that I’ve done for a Swedish rock/pop artist called Tiger Lou. Not to forget, I will release a new record under my alias The Hollow on Stockholm LTD called “Treat Me Bad” which will continue where the last one “We Want It Bad” ended. People has asked me about this subject and I thought it would take ages before I went back recoding new The Hollow material, but then it just happened. And also I’m super excited about all new releases coming out on my labels Stockholm LTD and Islands and Islets.

LWE Podcast 09: Pär Grindvik

<a

The majority of media and fan attention gets showered on the artists who create the music we love to listen to/DJ with/dance to, and for good reasons. But without the hard work, keen ears and business savvy of label staff, we’d be stuck only streaming tracks on Myspace. Number ten brings us to the cold and soulful sounds of Berlin’s Workshop. Headed by Jens Kuhn, known to many as Lowtec, Workshop is as much a label as it is a series of EPs. Since 2006, Lowtec and crew have put out a new EP every few months, each comprising three untitled tracks. Some showcase a single artist (Move D, Kassem Mosse and Lowtec have each commandeered one), while others feature a handful at once. LWE’s current favorite is Workshop 004, a collection of shadowy house tracks by Move D, Even Tuell and Sascha Dive. With its gray aesthetic and cryptic design, Workshop has chiseled a distinct identity and landed a distribution deal with Hard Wax, arguably Berlin’s most respected record shop. Lowtec gives us the lowdown on the snacks that inspired the label’s creation, their stratified demo system, and how smaller release runs could save the vinyl business. Also, an exclusive mix from Even Tuell inaugurates our Talking Shopcast series after the jump.

Please tell me about the beginning of Workshop. Why and how did you start out? How did you decide on the name Workshop?

It took us two bottles of wine to decide that Workshop would fit best because it expresses the way we talk about, deal with, and make decisions about the music we produce and receive as demos. We take our time with the Who/Why/What/When decisions. That’s what you learn from experience with fresh cheese and good Bordeaux.

Can you tell us a bit about why the tracks are all untitled?

Searching a good track name for “just-another-cool-dancetrack-or-DJ-tool” might seem a bit senseless or like a waste of time but sometimes track names fit so well that some artists skip that rule.

How do you select the artists for Workshop’s roster?

It’s mainly about good old friends and keeping the family together, but it also features relative newcomers like Gunnar, Kassem Mosse, or Sascha [Dive], which is the result of traveling around and keeping your eyes, and of course ears, open for fresh but familiar sounds.

Do you get many demos? What are some qualities you look for when sorting through them?

We get more and more demos. We have now a full-time employee, Natascha, who looks through the daily incoming packages, judges the stamp selection and info sheet style, weighs the sound and feels the base line temperatures. There are three demo baskets: a.) Nice tries, maybe cool for Carl, b.) Quite good music in general, but definitely not for us, and c.) Boys, give it a chance. Worth listening to

What is one of your favorite releases on your own label? Why?

We love Kassem’s record because it’s very special to us. We were kind of worried whether it would be recognized for its new-schoolish groove and its experimental slo-motion tempo.

Workshop: Keeping the rubber stamp industry booming.

According to many doomsayers, running a record label isn’t one of the “smartest” fiscal things to do. How do you keep Workshop running with sales “as they are”?

Hardwax does a very good job for our label and we’re very happy to work with them as our exclusive vinyl distributor. It seems easy for them to sell the stuff they like and if they don’t like a release very much, they’re honest about their view and advise or suggest lower production numbers to reduce the financial risk for the label.

Do you think mp3 blogs like LWE hurt the music industry? Do you think blogs have a role in the future of dance music promotion?

Definitely not and definitely yes. As long as it doesn’t feel like self-hyping or remote controlled hyping, remote controlled hyper PR or marketing of rubbish that there’s no adequate rubbish marketplace for… we think all this blogging is very fine and informative!

There is no shortage of labels in dance music. What does Workshop do to stand out from the crowd?

1st. We do what we love, like all the others hopefully do as well. 2nd. Maybe all the little underground labels should rethink their output frequency a bit. If they want they can contact Natascha 24/7 to learn how to handle it.

As technology advances further, vinyl is moving closer to becoming obsolete to many DJs. What are your feelings on this? Do you think the end of vinyl is in sight?

Vinyl will never die and it will definitely kill the mp3 industry, which we’re very sorry for. Mp3s cause a lot of messiness in one’s music collection. Vinyl does too, but it really feels better and it weighs a lot more.

What are a few other labels you respect/revere most?

Warp, Rephlex, Main Street Records, Source Records Heidelberg, Trax Records, Dance Mania, Dow & Vigliante, and the early years of Playhouse and Planet E.

What can we expect from Workshop in the next year or so?

Hopefully some very good EPs and a little Workshop showcase tour.

To get an aural idea of what Workshop’s all about, check out this exclusive new mix by Even Tuell. Some of you may know this Workshop gun already as the man behind the ghostly second track on Ame’s Fabric 42 mix. Entitled “DETROITENACHT,” this mix represents Workshop well — a serene variety of deep and soulful sounds, perfect for the descending autumn.

LWE Talking Shopcast 01: Even Tuell (73:00)

<a

It’s hard to say. There are some good DJs, but if I have to make a choice I take the most impressive DJs who’ve played over the last five years at my own “Diy” parties in Hamburg: Tobi Neumann, Martin Landsky, DH T, Âme (Kristian). These guys have played two or three times at our party over the last years and they’ve always done a great job.

Diynamic has just released its first label compilation, an important milestone. Where do you see Diynamic going from here?

I can tell you it’s amazing and a proud feeling for us. Nobody knows what the future is for Diynamic. The compilation is for us a next step. At the moment everything is going well and we are really happy about it. I’m really thankful about all that’s happening right now. We are not afraid about the future, as long as we have fun.

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

In 2009 we’re getting a new office and studio, which we will take together with our homies from Liebe*Detail. There we will have more space. I can’t wait. I must finished a remix for Toni Moreno’s “Piano Bar” (watch out for this guy, a big talent). A fantastic track, I play it all the time since I got it and I charted it also. I canceled all requests for remixes the last three months, ’cause I need a break now. But for this track I gave my go. In the next few weeks my new EP together with Ost & Kjex on Diynamic comes out, called “Nordisch by Nature,” as well as a remixes for Tiger Stripes’ “Hooked” on Liebe Detail, Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s “Blutsbrueder” on Musik Gewinnt Freunde and one for King Street Sounds.

Download: <a

They’re always better when I’m inspired.

What’s the concept behind the mix?

The concept was to bring the moodier side of techno into a dancefloor mentality. It’s not bang-bang-bang, but it definitely makes you want to move. And once you’re moving you start to feel the emotion come out of each song. So I’m basically mixing emotions on this mix.

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

I have to be completely honest with you about this, there are very few DJs I admire. This is because of all the great DJs I witnessed in Detroit when techno was kicking off. Those years spoiled me for life. I always dig when Derrick May plays. I also love listening to Laurent Garnier, Theo Parrish, Aaron Carl, Deetron and Ken Ishii. I think DJ Bone isn’t half bad either!

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

I am going to finish up my new album titled Another Language and release another mix CD. We also have a couple of compilations coming out and a few secret projects that I can’t speak about (too many of my concepts have been stolen already). I’m also doing some gigs in Europe.

LWE Podcast 07: DJ Bone

When and where did you make the mix?

Adam Marshall: The mix was done at home. At night. With friends.

What’s the concept behind the mix?

No concept per se. Hopefully it evokes a late night at a good club — soulful, dark and raw.

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

Hmmm… classics would be Derrick Carter, Theo Parrish, D-Wynn, Mike Huckaby, Harri, A Place Called Bliss, Murat, Laurent Garnier, DJ Harvey and Jeff Mills. Current faves would include Zip, Marc Schneider, Agnes, Cassy, Marcel Dettmann, Karizma along with Jeremy P.Caulfield, Mike Shannon, Jeff Milligan and DJ Traxx. Why? Because they have love and passion for the music they’re playing. And apart from possessing unique styles, technical skill and good taste, they can rock a club pretty hard . The whole DJ-experience is so environment-dependent I always find it hard to say who I like and who I don’t, but I know all of the above mentioned DJs have sent chills up my spine on numerous occasions.

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

I have a remix of a Seth Troxler track coming out on Crosstown Rebels in September, and a remix of Mike Shannon on his Cynosure label later in the year, among others. The next New Kanada release in October will be a track of mine called “Man and Nature,” with killer remixes from The Mole and Miss Fitz. There are also a few things in the pipeline for KUJI that I’m really excited about — new artists and new (mis)directions…

Download: LWE Podcast 06: Adam Marshall

<a

Combining different things (if I do longer sets, I usually combine old and new house, techno and a bit (electro) disco stuff. But one hour for me is a bit too short for telling this story ;o)

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

Some my favorite DJs are my Berghain and Panoramabar collegues: Prosumer, Steffi, Stephan Hill, Cassy, nd baumecker, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Shed, Marcel Fengler. And besides Berghain: Rolando, Redshape (live), Tobias Freund (live), Carsten Klemann, Mike Huckaby, Larry Heard, Moodymann, Patrice Scott, Omar-S, and Laurent Garnier. They all inspire me because while listening to their sets I have the feeling that they are or give: positive vibrations, moods, grooves, for being authentic, for creating ups and downs during their sets, for telling stories, for laying a lot of love and passion in music.

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

Another track from Prosumer and me on a Diamonds & Pearls compilation and maybe a track from Stephan Hill and me on Vidab.

When and where did you make the mix?

Nick Höppner: On a Monday afternoon in my living room, using 2 turntables, a mixer, vinyl and the occasional track played through Traktor Scratch.

What’s the concept behind the mix?

Not much of a concept here, to be honest. Just wanted to show what my DJ heart is beating for: from breaky jams to chunky, straight up house music, darker techno and dubbed out messiness

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

I just played with Dixon at our monthly MyMy party and he is the mack, really. Everything he plays is in tune, he’s got an incredible flow and is very versatile. Some of the stuff he plays is a bit too sweet for me, but he always manages to present it in such a convincing way, I end up liking those tracks very much. One DJ who really surprised me a lot was Shonky. I heard him for the first time and unlike his own production, he played a very energetic set of chunky, pumping, percussive and warm house music. Really blew me away. I also like Efdemin a lot. He’s not only a good friend, but also one of the most consistent DJs I know. Margaret Dygas can be amazing, too. She is on a more minimal tip and her mixing is very creative. She drives crowds crazy and you never know exactly why, because she is so subtle.

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

There’s a new MyMy EP coming out on Playhouse on July 21st. Lee [Jones] and I will start to work on a remix for the Brut! label this week and there will be another MyMy EP on Playhouse later this year. Hopefully, there will be a new solo EP from me coming out in October on Ostgut Ton.

LWE Podcast 03: Nick Höppner

<a
