Being an artist who is an early adopter, whether of technology or techniques, has its advantages: It’s easier to get noticed in an uncrowded field and harder to explain something that’s still so new. But what happens when the rest of the pack catches up and makes that once special trait seem commonplace? That seems to be the dilemma faced by Geurt Kersjes, the Dutch producer known in dance circles as Pitto. In 2008 his breakout track, “Sexvibe,” whirled across dance floors like an erotic tornado choked with endlessly looped vocals and menacing funk samples. Reminiscent of early house arrangements, it wasn’t groundbreaking so much novel for its time. He repeated the tactic, albeit less successfully, on 2009′s “Feelin’.” 12 months later his signature method seemed to be everywhere, and even the sample source for “Feelin’,” Phil Collins’ “I’m Not Moving,” was recycled in a similar if slower fashion by Trickski for “Pill Collins.” Pitto responded to these developments with his first single in two years, “Where My Soul Is Now” for the Green imprint.

It appears his reaction to unwitting imitators was to run headlong in the opposite direction. Kersjes embraced jazzy instrumentation, hushed electro rhythms, and talented vocalist Leonie Muller, who narrates a depressing tale across the track’s nine and a half minutes. At points its slow-burning development feels luxurious, especially when pizzicato strings dart across the swaying Rhodes melodies; other times it’s not quite enough to justify its own length. Kersjes is a noted fan of making long tracks, but under the weight of its vocal narrative “Where” seems long for length’s sake. Minilogue’s “Guqin Mix,” which could have aimed to make the tune more DJ friendly, is closer to a traditional dub that stretches and dunks the original in pools of reverb and pits of delay. It’s not unlike walking through a hippie’s house, littered with odd stringed instruments and inexplicable noises, leaving you reeking of patchouli and too disoriented to get back to the club. As an indication of Pitto’s current state, “Where My Soul Is Now” suggests he’s still finding his footing on this new, more adventurous path that’s surely explored on his forthcoming debut LP. But every early adopter has to seize something new to maintain that status.

This enigmatic three tracker defies placement in space and time, with a sound well versed in classic methods but as fresh as anything else out there. Here’s hoping whoever sent “Sect 1″ to me is prepared to share its wealth with a much larger audience.

02. dOP, “Cum With Me” [Milnor Modern] (buy)
When dOP goes on to greater success (it’s coming; I can see it already), critics will look back to their “God Bless the Child EP” as a watershed moment for the trio. Bursting through genre boundaries like French Kool-Aid guys, dOP experiment with Malian kora music and lithe, funky house songs (“Cum With Me”) without skipping a beat. 03. Osunlade, “My Reflection” (Deetron remix)

What I love about Deetron’s “My Reflection” remix is how he mixes spikey analog stepping stones and fluid synth whirls to chart a decadent path for Divine Essence’s quixotic lyrics. That Sam Geiser can maintain a deep atmosphere with a techno toolkit is impressive, letting Osunlade’s soulful expressions shine through while wholly owning the track. Deetron strikes again!

04. The Mole, “Baby, You’re the One” [Wagon Repair] (buy)
As on his forthcoming album, As High As the Sky, Colin de la Plante (aka The Mole) whips up a cyclone of frantically looped samples on the lengthy house mover, “Baby, You’re the One.” But this is no natural disaster; The Mole’s clever programming keeps listeners of all stripes stuck in “Baby”‘s groove as it mutates across 13 minutes.

05. Luke Solomon, “People, Places, Thoughts And Faces” (Ajello Remix) [REKIDS]
I have to admit, I’m late to the party on Luke Solomon, but his forthcoming “Robots” EP for REKIDS certainly alerted me to what I’ve been missing. While the package also contains an incredible Prins Thomas diskomiks, it’s heretofore unknowns Ajello whose piano-led, Black Devil-esque remix is stuck on repeat here at LWE HQ.

Sex can be any number of things for its participants; but if the experience is up to par it can become all encompassing to the point one’s sense of time, restraint and self consciousness are thrown to the wind. Relative newcomer Pitto (Geurt Kersjes) has managed to capture that enraptured feeling with his latest track, “Sexvibe.” The Dutch producer has moved away from the piano-laden deep house of his Phil E debut — the flipside to Jackmate’s “Nomads” — and indulged in frothy, massively physical loops on the second Arearemote.

In its construction, “Sexvibe” is hardly different from the first house tracks which intertwined loops of disco, funk and soul soul samples. Where Pitto excels beyond the simple formula is in source material selection, starting with a galloping house beat and generously air-thickening bass tone. From there he pushes the tension higher and the dancers harder with hypnotic layers of guitar upstrokes and a woman ceaselessly purring the title (possibly hinting at The Mole’s “Border Times”). That’s just the first half. After a short breath-catching lull, a fierce new loop of interlocking string and horn stabs rises to the fore, an exhilarating blend of sinister and pleasurable tones to get the hands in the air. “Sexvibe” is a whirling dervish of a house tune that intoxicates and distorts as it repeats its seductive mantra; it’s also an impressive second effort for an otherwise obscure producer. I look forward to getting sweaty and lost in Pitto’s future releases as well.
