The Mountain People, Mountain007

Standing on the brink of vapid minimalism seems to have been enough to bring Mountain People back into the arms of tone and depth. Rozzo starved “Mountain006” of nearly all nourishing elements, leaving little for even some ardent supporters (myself included) to admire. Although the characteristic abundance of the first few Mountain People releases is returning only gradually, “Mountain007” is a fine return to form.

While the author(s) of the latest Mountain People are purportedly “unknown”, evidence suggests Rozzo and Serafin may well be responsible: Both sides share a tight production style with the MP catalog and “007.2” bears strong resemblance to Serafin’s “Back to New York” remixes. Perhaps keeping the mystery alive is how much “007.1” shares with hordes of minimal deep house tracks, namely gauzy Rhodes chords and a thrifty rhythm section. Meticulous details, however, set it apart just as quickly, from the sub-bass minutiae to the feral collection of percussion timbres etching texture into the tune. And as the drums pull back and sustained organ chords roll out, only to descend a half step further down the scale, it’s like a burnt sunset sky bruising purple as the sun dips below the horizon. “007.2” has more moving parts that jingle and vibrate, and its lattice work of reverberating stabs are rendered in a muted tonal palate. DJs who favor MP’s more percussive, groove-oriented releases will relish this side. From the breath-taking A side to the steady workmanship of side B, “Mountain007” stands as a potent reminder of Mountain People’s production prowess.

so i’ve been waiting to see how people would weigh in on this one, and either everyone hates it and doesn’t want to be a debbie downer, or they were waiting to see what someone else would say and go from there.

in any event…

i absolutely love this release. hell, i loved #6, too, which everyone thought was a waste of wax. people need to understand that the mountain people tracks, especially as of late, are tools. anyone that mixes in to it in the first 45sec. and lets it ride for its entire 10min. is probably the same type of person that’s going “i listened to it and it was boring.”

they’re lush, beautifully simple, and quirky as all hell, and they make people dance and rock out quite easily. the basslines on both are deep and soulful, and the percussive points to them both make your feet do things you can’t control.

i’ve been beating the shit out of the a-side for a while now, and just recently have started utilizing the b-side more and more – quality stuff again from the duo from switzerland.

I’m slightly disappointed by the last two MP releases – MP5 still being my favourite. DJ wise these guys are great. You can find a sweet mix from the Mountain People DJs here: http://www.roof.fm/en/archive/shows/

I didn’t really like the last one, yes it’s a tool but even as a tool it was just too lacking of any dynamic, i could find better tools in almost the same style. However i’ve been returning to the very first MP release lately, playing that a lot, and this one is plain awesome, the vocal sample works great for a tool and i can’t wait to play this!
