Introducing LWE’s Podcast Competition

LWE’s podcast series is a favorite feature of the site for readers, artists and staff alike, one of the few throwbacks to the halcyon days of our mp3 blogging youth. But it also means we rarely post mixes unless they’re part of the series, generally leaving it to blogs like mnml ssgs, Random Circuits, Infinitestatemachine and Teleosteopathy to showcase the rest. As part of our year end round up, we would like to bridge the gap between the two schools of blogging and ask you, our readers, to contribute a mix for our podcast series. Whether you’re touring Europe every weekend or bedroom mixing for yourself, we want to hear your mixes — and the best one will be our last podcast of the year (and its creator the recipient of a bountiful prize pack from NRK Sound Division). Interested? Good, we thought you might be. Full rules and deadline after the jump.

So what exactly are we looking for? All mixes should be between 45-50 minutes long, exclusive to LWE, include a tracklist, and sent as a 192kbps mp3 through filesharing sites such as YouSendIt or Sendspace to editor@littlewhiteearbuds.com. They are due no later than 12 p.m. CST on December 16th. Late entries will not be scored.

We will score your mixes based on five criteria:

Depth: Is your mix ripped from the charts, a stale slate of house classics, or obscure yet middling? Mix it up.

Relevance: If you’re been reading LWE for a minute you probably have a sense of the sound we’re looking for. Hip-hop, blog-house, prog., trance, juke and drum n’ bass are fine enough for their own purposes, but will not score well in this competition.

Transitions: We want to hear compelling blends/combinations executed such that we’re clamoring for the next one. Slapping the fader across, dull mechanical perfection and painful juxtapositions are all turn offs.

Technique: Does your use of EQ/levels/effects leave us cringing or awe-struck? Show off and make sure it sounds good.

Entertainment Value: Your selections should make us want to move and keep our interest throughout the mix’s length.

The mix with the highest score will be featured in our podcast series and its creator will win copies of Charles Webster, Coast 2 Coast, Peace Division, Coast 2 Coast, Dave Clarke, Back In the Box, the still fresh Deep Sensation 2 2xCD, and a box of NRK goodies. Second place wins copies of Deep Sensation 2, one Coast 2 Coast of their choice (Peace Division or Charles Webster), and a copy of Back in the Box. Third place wins one Coast 2 Coast of their choice and a copy of Deep Sensation 2.

We highly encourage you to suggest this contest to any DJ trying to get a little more exposure or just interested in competing. Feel free to ask questions about the contest in the comments section. Again, mixes due no later than 12 p.m. CST on December 16th. Late entries will not be scored. Good luck and get mixing!

Yeah ,fine but 40-45min is too short…

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 1, 2008 at 6:24 AM

I understand your concern, Boyan. We asked for shorter mixes because the task of listening to and judging a possible huge number of mixes extending beyond 45 minutes could impact our ability to give each mix the time it deserves. Also, a shorter time requirement forces contestants to really bring their A game.

sounds like i’ve got something to keep myself busy with this weekend…

“one of the few throwbacks to the halcyon days of our mp3 blogging youth”

If that line’s a joke ok. if not, come on.. how long have you been posting shit online? it’s not like you opened the factory or something…

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 1, 2008 at 8:31 AM

It’s half joking and half truthful. I’ve been blogging since 2003, and mp3 blogging from, say, 2004 to 2007, before LWE existed. But I’m referring to the site’s earliest days, not my own.

ardour  on December 1, 2008 at 8:37 AM

seriously, take it easy, bob….

kiddo  on December 1, 2008 at 8:40 AM

Well, if Eric Cloutier is competing in this thing, there’s no point in even sending in my entry. : p He’s too damn good!

look…my sarcasm detector isn’t broken, elly. 😛

I shall take my nose and place to to the grindstone.

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 1, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Just a note that we’ve update the rules so mixes can be between 45-50 minutes long, just to give you all a little more time to show off your DJing prowess. Use it wisely!

harpomarx42  on December 1, 2008 at 10:35 AM

Thanks, Steve. Now I can get that one last song in…

kiddo  on December 1, 2008 at 11:59 AM

look…my sarcasm detector isn’t broken, elly. I was actually dead serious. Take the compliment and deal with it, dammit. : D

chris  on December 1, 2008 at 7:25 PM

very cool of you to do this. i know i’ll be working on one, but i’m very excited to hear what great mixes surface!

Tundra  on December 3, 2008 at 2:20 AM

I think i’ll have a go at one today as well.

frankjohn  on December 5, 2008 at 9:52 PM

my mix went to 54. will it be disqualified?

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 6, 2008 at 9:45 AM

No, it will not be disqualified.

harpomarx42  on December 6, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Mix finished, clocking in at 49:22. And it does sound human.

MH  on December 9, 2008 at 7:09 AM

i only have half my tracklist, will that be disqualified?

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 9, 2008 at 8:31 AM

You don’t know which tracks you used? How do we know it’s yours?

eric cloutier  on December 9, 2008 at 9:33 AM

i’m perplexed as to how you wouldn’t know what you played…*scratches head*

regardless, mine was submitted sunday.

will we get to hear everyones, or just the top one / three?

MH  on December 9, 2008 at 9:38 AM

my pc wont record properly just now, but i have an older mix on my comp but having trouble finding some of the tracks, ill have a deeper look, ill just leace it if i can’t find them, cheers

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 9, 2008 at 9:49 AM

Eric, only the top mix will be available.

ToneLov  on December 9, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Would an post editing effects be classified as technique or entertainment value?
Also, how would you look at booty-shakin originals is (theoretically) we have them?

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 10, 2008 at 8:25 AM

If by post-editing effects you mean effects applied to your mix after recording it, I would classify it as cheap and inadvisable.

harpomarx42  on December 10, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Listening to my mix, I’m analysing it in a more critical light now. I can hear every minor mistake…am I taking this contest too seriously?

d.j.r.  on December 11, 2008 at 11:02 AM

I’m going to assume mastering isn’t advised

this is an intro to whats in store for the contenders..

.. and emailed, sir editOr.

was wondering.. what about archive.org? its where most of me mixes are..downloads faster under creative commons of course. peace.
peace.

littlewhiteearbuds  on December 11, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Archive.org is fine, but only if you can prove it’s your mix somehow.

eric cloutier  on December 11, 2008 at 2:06 PM

I’m going to assume mastering isn’t advised

its a 192kbps podcast, not the next fabric : live cd. 😛

harpomarx42  on December 12, 2008 at 10:58 AM

@eric
Thank god for that. Mastering isn’t exactly my speciality.

frankjohn  on December 14, 2008 at 9:27 PM

i managed to squeeze everything into fifty minutes, almost on the dot, and didn’t have to do any editing nonsense. just one take straight through. i hope you guys got the link!

Ghos313  on December 14, 2008 at 10:02 PM

It’s funny that the blogger doesn’t want any blog house, although I probably couldn’t even tell you what that is. Hopefully that isn’t what I’m planning on! It’s not mixed on a computer program, though. Do we get bonus points for actually handling the media? hehheh.

Andrey  on December 16, 2008 at 10:49 AM

Uff I just might be the last person to submit a mix – 15 min to deadline! Hope I still qualify hehe. Done at 6am – 11am in the midst of college finals. I better go pass out now
