Double Hill, Wanna Get…

The Wolf + Lamb family have some phenomenal mixes floating around — check Wolf + Lamb or No Regular Play’s Beats in Space editions or their DJ-Kicks CD for proof — but their productions often seem like middling, slowed-down tech house tools. The diffuse crew are at their best when they stop worrying about ease of play and simply let things flow, and this is precisely what Israeli producer Double Hill does on Wanna Get…, his debut EP for Double Standard Records.

The two tracks on the A-side exemplify the kind of strutting, adult grooves that make the aforementioned mixes so enjoyable. On opener “Purple Hills,” languorous horns float above synthesizer cushion and sultry vocal murmurings. It’s definitely loungey but Double Hill pulls it off smoothly, all of its elements appropriately pared down. The title track is the clear standout here, recalling Metro Area in its orderly, sashaying structure. Although it’s fairly similar to its predecessor, the producer applies a fantastic, burbling bass line and removes the horns, making it a comparatively refined variation. “Everytime I Go” is a shuffling boogie-influenced track, a bit punchier than its counterparts on the A-side, but infused with the same type of understated atmospherics. Its use of a diva’s “yay-yay” feels gauche, but doesn’t drag things down that much. Record closer “Body Motion” has all the trimmings of looping, slow house — a methodical pace, bouncing bass, and jubilant strings — but ends up rather forgettable. All in all, though, the Wanna Get…EP is a promising debut.
