DOTW: GusGus, Over

Say what you will about GusGus, but they’re never short on ideas. In their more than 15 years together and across several line-ups, the Icelandic group has released eight albums and dozens of singles, explored electronica, industrial pop, techno, acid and house. So it’s with a cheeky if world-weary attitude that they approach “Over,” the first single for their 2011, Kompakt-released LP Arabian Horse. Its underpinnings are effervescent to the point of being just shy of cheesy, anchored on the side of good taste by sharp bass jabs. Vocalists Daníel Ágúst and Urður Hákonardóttir practically acknowledge the progressive nature of the instrumental when they sing, “We didn’t try this time,” before later declaring it an opportunity to “start over.” It calls to mind the theatricality of Fischerspooner if they were produced by Gui Boratto — electronic pop that hides its slight edge under a devil-may-care attitude. Our thanks to GusGus and Kompakt for making this one available.
