Marvin Belton’s latest single for Ferrispark, Love Will Find A Way, fosters the impression that the label’s owner, Scott Ferguson, thinks long and hard before committing anything to wax. Containing two remixes dating back to 2003 and 2007, as well as undated “Dark Dub,” the record provides perspective on how tastes and production styles have shifted during its 8-year gestation. Though Ferguson produces the tracks credited to Belton, it is the caliber of Belton’s lyrics that lend them purpose and depth. His past efforts, particularly “Bleed To Be Free” or “The Letter” were not merely “vocals,” they told a story. “Love Will Find A Way” follows this same trajectory.

With emphasized rimshots and a sultry keyboard progression, the original 2003 mix delivers a classic house vibe with Belton’s impassioned lyrics about the tribulations we’re willing to go through for love give the track an unwavering honesty. There’s a lot of sentimentality in the record, so the understatedness of the instrumental arrangement is a strength, making the lyrics seem more passionate than patronizing. The differences in the 2007 mix are subtle but make for a more dramatic take, as it introduces Belton from the start and sends him echoing throughout lusher melodic arrangements. The “Dark Dub” is the most blatant club tackle of the three, with more demanding drum programming and only the smallest vocal hook threaded through a continually growing and growling acid line. With Love Will Find A Way, Belton and Ferguson have proven once again to be excellent creative partners, ones who make you wonder just what else they have stashed away for a later date.

Excellent EP. Dark Dub has been doing serious business for me for months

Dark Dub is sick. However, the passion in the vocal (and the way it builds) on the other side is lovely. Big respect, looking forward to Ferris Park next release.
