Till Von Sein’s innate, sophisticated ability to channel the American deep house sound through the prism of Berlin techno is something to behold. This ability has put him among the ranks of Berlin’s impressive list of house loving producers including Efdemin, Sebo K, or Prosumer etc. Late last year, Till Von Sein’s “Gestern” was unfairly overlooked with DJs opting for the Efdemin remix. No offense to Mark August, who turns in a good remix on Till Von Sein’s latest release “Sein Days” on Morris / Audio, but I’ll bet Till Von Sein will not be overlooked this time.

The gritty bass line that dominates “Herr Bert” bleeds dirty, nasty Bootsy Collins funk. By the time the claps come in they take the form of a bitch slap that won’t remit until you submit to the groove. On top of everything a perfectly phrased organ skips over puddles left by the bass line, but not without splashing in them from time to time. Almost the sonic opposite of “Herr Bert” is “Berno,” full of delicate, longing vibraphones and organs that create a warm impressionistic portrait of daybreak. As the sun breaks the horizon, an organ growls like a solar flair and the percussion awakens stomping its foot with greater authority. Mark August’s remix leans more towards techno with a looping bass reminiscent to the bass line in Marcel Fengler’s “Early Glow,” but it retains the soft house sound of the original. And fried circuit hum is scattered amongst lonely vibraphones and a soft vamping piano, adding a neurotic feel not present in the original. There’s nothing to be nervous about with this release, as Till Von Sein’s “Sein Days” has set the bar high for himself early in 2008. (post by Manuel Sanchez)
