In the mix

This past weekend I loaded up on live sets and DJ mixes for a long car trip down to Peoria. One of them was a radio mix by Len Faki and Marcel Dettmann recently featured on mnml ssgs. The sets were so tightly controlled, so powerfully mixed and so rhythmically infections that I just might of been weaving all over the highway, bopping along in my car; I’ll never tell. With the inspiration still fresh in my mind, I sat down tonight and had fun behind my “decks.” Unfortunately I couldn’t turn the volume up loud enough to get completely lost in the music, but I still think it’s a decent preview to the kind of stuff one might expect at one of my upcoming gigs.

great mix!

i think it’s ‘jedi’ by pikaya though, not fango.

Very nice. Those to catch you behind the decks are in for a treat. Good mixing as well.

hm, that’s strange. i listened to this set aswell, with dettmann being one of my favorite djs, but was very disappointed by how bad and sloppy the mixing was. weird.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris.

SMA, I’ve not heard any of his other sets so comparatively it might have been sloppier. I thought it was pretty good, though.

just finished listening to your mix. really like it! especially serafin’s “dream sequence”. still a magic track. what i also liked was that you integrated something a bit “older” with ame’s “hydrolic dog”. cool stuff!

coming back to dettmann and faki. as you close your mix with ben klock: have you listened to any of his dj sets by any chance?

Glad you liked it! I wish I could find more older stuff on high quality mp3. Maybe as things progress further and further away from vinyl people will go back and encode old back catalogs. I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for it, though.

The only Ben Klock set I’ve heard was his RA podcast, which was one of my favorites from last year. I can only listen to so much Berghain-styled techno but he’s definitely a master at organizing such material.

Saw Klock live this new year at Berghain, which was one of the most amazing performance I ever attended. The way he blended the tracks was just unbeliveably good, with the transistions sometimes stretching over five to six minutes. The RA podcast was also one of my most favorite mixes of last year. Still listening to it.

As far as older stuff goes: you’re definitely right there. But as I am one of these few creatures who think that the quality of new releases is still very high, I do not whine about old records that much. Not yet. 😉
