Exclusive DOTW: David Keno, Smackbelly

David Keno closed out 2011 with Traveler, an EP for Get Physical’s adolescent sub-label, Kindisch. While the Swiss-born, Berlin-based producer and the imprint have since moved on to new releases, it’s recently come to light that one track got left off Traveler which was certainly worth the vinyl real estate. And so, courtesy of Kindisch and Keno, “Smackbelly” is this week’s exclusive download. In some respects it’s understandable why the tune wasn’t included, as unlike its vocal-clad, would-be peers, “Smackbelly”‘s ostinato melody makes its way down the scale and eschews vocals altogether. Bracing kicks are rounded out by toms sounds so wet they might as well be thwacked tennis balls, and pad sweeps are nudged out of frame by quick, rubberband-taut progressions. There’s a familiarity to “Smackbelly” in its arrangements, but we can’t put our finger on what it’s referencing, the sign of a track that successfully acknowledges classic dance tropes without trying to sound overtly classic. All the more reason we’re glad it’s finally making its way from Kindisch’s hard drives to yours.
