Connecting The Compass, a new compilation soon to be released by Roundabout Sounds, is an impressive feat of A&R work which sees Detroit’s Rick Wilhite reprise his curatorial role alongside label owner, Joe Babylon. It comes stocked with 11 unreleased tunes from a cast including Marcellus Pittmann, Norm Talley, and Karizma, as well as Baaz, Jacques Bon & Nicolas Villebrun (of Smallville/Aim acclaim), and Soulphiction, the supplier of this week’s exclusive download. As with many of his tracks, “Lone Sun” is a story with two distinct chapters. Beginning with a john picking up a prostitute, the track descends from strutting disco samples to a moody, spare synth pattern made whole by long, splashy samples of a gospel/soul group. One imagines it’s a bit what you’d feel like looking through record collection of the producer born as Michel Baumann, and if you want that sweet vinyl you’d have to pay. At any rate, you can check out samples of the whole compilation here. Thanks to Joe Babylon and Rick Wilhite for giving us this exclusive tune.
