In the history of smart marketing there have probably been better ideas than calling your freshly minted label Cunting Records, but then maybe owner Lee Latmir knows something about trend forecasting I don’t. In any case, the name is in direct contrast with its first release from Latmir and Tim Burns under the name Wonky Dynamo. Lush, pizzicato strings add graceful flourishes to the slow, measured house of “Never Loved Before.” Vocalist Tash Panas lends her soulful tones to the track, which amplify the languid grooves further. Like their name implies, there’s a touch of wonkiness to the dub mix, the bass considerably more rotund, the beats taking on a slight stepping feel to them. Shur-I-Kan weighs in with smooth, deep house re-interpretations of the vocal and dub mixes but the real beauty lays with the originals. With Wonky Dynamo’s next release for the imprint promising an Atjazz remix and vocalist Jehlaz who has worked with Kerri Chandler among others, something tells me we’ll have to get used to the potty mouthed label’s name.
