Moody, Ol’ Dirty Vinyl

Kenny Dixon Jr.’s interests don’t lie solely in house music. That much has always been apparent in his music and from his descriptions of his record collection. The fact in itself isn’t terribly interesting — many of our record shelves are dappled with other types of music between rows of white labels and sleeves. Moody takes his varied interests quite literally and actually makes a diverse array of tunes. Just check “We Don’t Care” and “No Feedback” on KDJ number 39, Ol’ Dirty Vinyl. The former is laid-back piano jazz for the lounge and the latter raucous rock n’ roll branded by a searing guitar solo. Both feature Moody’s breathy vocals and emerge as engaging odes the music he loves, not tired excursions from a producer out of his element. Spicing up the pot we also have “The Hacker,” a jumble of abstract electronics whose providence, somewhat fittingly, Moody can’t seem to remember.

Luckily these are just the very tasty sides to a hearty main course. “Ol’ Dirty Vinyl (U Used To Know)” is the star of the A-side with a bright demeanor and occasional dusty-vinyl fizz outs. Phantasmal vocals proclaiming that “you used to know that you were mine” temper the merry attitude with a twinge of loss, and its instability make it seem like some old archived recording. “It’s 2 Late 4 U And Me,” which will appeal to Moodymann fiends and your average dancers alike, is the EP’s best track. A squirming bass line courtesy of Bubs Fiddler and keys from his brother Amp really spice things up and keep the jazzy vibes of the EP going strong, here in the firm context of a house jam. It’s KDJ at his best, and worth the undivided attention of DJs as well as anyone else who has simply a passing interest in good music. It’s fittingly vinyl only, but it will take a long time for this one to get old and dirty.
