In 2008 Plak Records launched the “+91 Ahead Sessions,” one of the most intriguing series of releases in recent years wherein label owner, Chaton, asked friends and compatriots to reinterpret his “+91 Ahead.” This yielded impressive revisions by Ripperton and Agnès and decent ones by John Daly and Dachshund, and the fourth edition features reworks by Quarion and newcomer Se-Te-Ve. The most interesting variable is how much of the clanging original is retained. While both embrace its ringing percussion, Session 4 varies greatly on how much was added. From a base of chilled organ chords and upper register drones Quarion builds a track whose wordless bursts from Rev. Al Green and sparing glissandos give his “BKLYN Version” a jazzy hustle. Se-Te-Ve gets caught up in an anxious cloud of tremulous chords and adds little besides a short-lived, snub-nosed synth progression. Compared to Quarion’s dazzling interpretation, his seems as innocuous as humming fluorescent lights.

I cannot for the life of me remember what the original sounds like.
