Sascha Dive, Deepest America

[Ornaments] The third release on the mysterious, limited edition Ornaments label looks to be the highest profile yet. The original August 2007 release of Sascha Dive’s “Deepest America” on Deep Vibes Recordings included two mixes by his alter ego, Samuel Davis, and this release features a third, the Dark Soul Mix. While it’s a funky […]

Los Updates, First If You Please The Remix Part 2

[Cadenza] Los Updates’ First If You Please full-length has the distinction of being not only the first artist album released on Luciano’s Cadenza imprint, but also hands-down the most disappointing thing the label has released to date — an uninspired set of tech-house tunes dragged down like an anchor by Jose Gonzalez’ cringe-worthy lyrics and […]

Quince, Genetrix EP

[Music Man Records] Quince, aka Bram Sluiter (he’s also released a pair of singles as Quinn), follows up his “Expanding Contracting EP” on Delsin with a three-tracker on Music Man that further mines the pure electronic techno sound that’s been brought back into vogue of late. With a clear, cold eye on the floor and […]

Dave Aju, Open Wide

[Circus Company] San Francisco sound merchant Dave Aju has had the world waiting for Open Wide since his summertime smash “Crazy Place” was issued as a taster a few months back. Aju has always blended his house/techno with a smattering of outside influences, from funk to jazz and all points in between, and those styles […]

Sten, The Essence

[Dial] Dial co-founder Peter M. Karsten is better known under his more prolific Lawrence alias, but his recordings as Sten are just as worthy of attention. His second full-length album, The Essence, compiles (on the CD version, at least; the LP version varies slightly) three previous singles (including his most recent, “Way To The Stars” […]

Mike Shannon, Memory Tree

[Plus 8 Records] While it’s higher profile offshoot label M_nus continues to tread water and slowly transform into some sort of sci-fi cartoon series, Richie Hawtin’s original Plus 8 imprint keeps on putting out quality techno releases with a lot less frequency but a much higher level of quality across the board. Veteran Canadian label-skipper […]

Minimal Man, Make A Move

[Trelik] A collaborative project between Baby Ford and Ian “Eon” Loveday birthed way back in 1993, Minimal Man have released a dozen or so singles for such labels as Perlon, Trelik, Guerilla, and Vinyl Solution. But it’s been “Make A Move,” originally released in 2000, that has taken on a life of its own via […]

Shackleton, Shortwave/You Bring Me Down (Remixes)

Of the new generation of dubstep producers, Sam Shackleton has proven himself to be the most receptive to crossing over with other genres in a mutually back-scratching manner. After famously remixing and being remixed by Ricardo Villalobos, Shackleton has more favors returned here. Reprising a combo first seen on last year’s Steingarten remixes project, Shackleton has two tracks from his forthcoming Skull Disco full-length remixed by Pole and Peverelist for a special vinyl release from ~scape, furthering the cross-pollination efforts.

Väth vs. Rother/Ricardo Villalobos, Cocoon Morphs Tokyo

[Cocoon Recordings] As a tie-in to a series of April club dates in Japan, Sven Väth’s Cocoon Recordings released a special Japan-only compilation CD in celebration of the event. Now available worldwide due to popular demand, six of the seven CD tracks are also being released on vinyl as a special three-part single to celebrate […]

Model 500, Starlight

[echospace [detroit]] It made perfect sense for echospace [detroit] to issue new remixes of Model 500’s immortal “Starlight” back in the summer of 2007. After all, Juan Atkins’ and Mortiz von Oswald’s 1995 original is a clear touchstone for the echospace sound, fusing the dubbed-out analog washes of Berlin’s Basic Channel camp with the rhythmic […]

A Guy Called Gerald, In Ya Head

[Perlon] Gerald Simpson has a rightful place at the head of the electronic music table, a pioneer of acid house, techno, drum and bass, and many spots in-between (including a stint in 808 State). Now making the move to Perlon has apparently inspired our man Gerald to unleash his best single in years. With a […]

LWE 2Q Reports: Top 5 Irritating Trends in Techno

Photo by Shen Wei For our second report, LWE correspondent Todd Hutlock passionately offers his top five irritating trends marring the state of techno (and its criticism) in 2008. Musically speaking, I find a lot to love about today’s electronic dance music scene; there is a lot more good than bad going on, and I […]

Alex Picone, Furby Floppy EP

[Cadenza Records] Italian producer Alessandro Picone is a newcomer to the Cadenza camp, but from the sounds of his debut EP (and his appearance on label boss Luciano’s recent Fabric mix CD) he should fit in just fine. “Floppy” kicks off with Cadenza’s trademark layered percussion and a croaking bass line (see the cover art […]

Marcel Dettmann, MDR 04

[Marcel Dettmann Records] As the dark prince of the Berlin club scene, Marcel Dettmann has quite a buzz about him these days. Though he’s been a resident DJ at hotspot Berghain since it opened the first time, he’s a relative newcomer to recorded work, releasing his first tracks in 2006. Now, hot on the heels […]

Petar Dundov, Oasis

[Music Man Records] A limited edition in stylish plastic spot-varnish sleeve and your choice of colored vinyls (blue, silver, and white), veteran Croation producer Petar Dundov’s latest (and first release since February of 2007) visually jumps off the shelves at collectible-minded buyers, but the real treasures are on the vinyl itself. Released as a taster […]
