Kevin Saunderson, History Elevate 3

[KMS] While parsing through a slightly heated discussion over whether Kevin Saunderson’s recent RA podcast — packed with poppy cuts and mixed with CDs/Ableton — had stained his legendary status, one post stood out to me. The author reminded the participants that Saunderson’s long career took place both above ground and underground, so it shouldn’t […]

Intrusion, Intrusion/Reflection

[echospace [detroit]] Given the wobbly state of music distribution after the shuttering of Syntax, Amato and Watts Music and a dollar value which shrivels daily next to the euro, Detroit/Chicago-based label echospace can be forgiven for being stingy on new releases. Echospace released the majority of its catalog last year as well, which makes this […]

Christian Prommer’s Drum Lesson Vids

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba6Xg_oS7iA] Josh Wink, “Higher State of Consciousness” My friend James pulled up these videos from the Sonar Kollektiv 10th anniversary party at which Christian Prommer happily schooled the audience. There’s a handful more of them, including “Rej,” “Beau Mot Plage,” and “Can You Feel It.” You can check them all out here. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok7a0UM8ttA] Rhythim Is […]

Oracy, Rewound

[Mojuba] Whoever hides behind the Oracy moniker has done a fantastic job of evading the press; so in lieu of any relevant biographical information, here’s the definition of “oracy”: the ability to express oneself in and understand spoken language. Use it to poke fun at your friends’ and enemies’ intelligence! As with their first two […]

Talking Shop with Moodmusic

Welcome to the fourth edition of our series of short interviews affectionately titled Talking Shop. The majority of media and fan attention gets showered on the artists who create the music we love to listen to/DJ with/dance to, and for good reasons. But without the hard work, keen ears and business savvy of label staff, […]

Force Of Nature, Remixed

[Mule Musiq] Ramping up to re-release their album III this summer, Force of Nature enlisted a couple of high-profile remixers to re-introduce the album. Force of Nature, a Japanese producer duo, keeps their arpeggiators slow and wide-eyed enough to be pretty malleable fodder (a trait shared with M83). So it’s no surprise that “Remixed” is […]

Martin Buttrich, Stoned Autopilot

[Planet E] Though it was considered one of 2007’s decent sized hits, the lack of nuance and by-the-numbers minimal arrangement of Martin Buttrich’s “Hunter” 12″ caught me off guard. After the aptly-titled “Well Done,” “Cloudy Bay” and the ubiquitous “Full Clip,” all of which were deftly chiseled and fitting of Buttrich’s production pedigree, I felt […]

Claro Intelecto, Metanarrative

[Modern Love] One characteristic of Claro Intelecto’s music I admire most is its immediacy and visceral structure. You’ll never need a music composition degree to untangle vast webs of overly complicated arrangements to find something to connect with. Starting with his 2004 Neurofibre album for Ai Records, Intelecto (aka Mark Stewart) put forth tunes whose […]

Kawabata, Persuasion

[Drumpoet Community] Although Switzerland has been turning out quality producers and DJs for some time now, more recently it seems DJs and fans alike have been clamoring for Swiss exports like they were free chocolate bars — Serafin/Rozzo/Mountain People, Quarion, Deetron, Agnès, Ripperton and Michal Ho are a few who come to mind. Like his […]

Tadeo, Cosmos Remixes

[Apnea] Miguel Sar, better known as Tadeo, is one of the few producers making minimal techno whose work continually interests me post-mnml glut. His productions are often spiny and spiked with nuanced loops, making for tracks utilitarian enough for industrious DJs and bountifully ear-catching for those who go long and linear. His work for Cray1 […]

Cavalry in the mix

I feel like this was recorded years ago. In the midst of major changes [ie. moving – nb] I sat down and recorded this mix inconspicuously before dinner to take my mind off my hunger. I closed the door to my dark, cramped room and disappeared far away from present time and space into another […]

Shackleton, Death Is Not Final

[Skull Disco] Shackleton is consistent. Starting with the first pop of a drum on his singles, the percussion stays round and full, the bass cascades with uncanny depth, the space between is frigid. Shackleton’s sound is dark, opaque. From the elegiac wind blasts of “Blood on my Hands” to the outright menace of “Hypno Angel,” […]

Pitto, Sexvibe

[Arearemote] Sex can be any number of things for its participants; but if the experience is up to par it can become all encompassing to the point one’s sense of time, restraint and self consciousness are thrown to the wind. Relative newcomer Pitto (Geurt Kersjes) has managed to capture that enraptured feeling with his latest […]

Time of the month

Having survived its tumultuous birth, The Body Politic returns this Wednesday (9 p.m.) for its second attempt to upend the underground techno/house scene in Chicago (it’s closer to Lilliputians lighting matches between a clubbers’ toes, but one step at a time). This month we’re fortunate enough to have excellent DJ/producer/our friend Tyrel Williams spinning with […]

Satin Jackets, Conspiracy Theories EP

[Noble Square Records] The man known only as Satin Jackets was raised on a Navajo Indian reservation in the 80’s where he proved himself as a skilled archer and sprinter. While passing through the territory on tour, one of house music’s greatest figures (who asked not to be identified) saw the boy darting across the […]

LWE Interviews Brendon Moeller

Many musicians end up moving to New York City to boost their career and get closer the signature sounds which prodded them to play music in the first place. But it’s a bit rarer to find an artist whose love for the feedback-laden outlook of the No Wave scene leads them to switch continents and […]

Sebbo, Watamu Beach

[Desolat] After an unusually brutal and excessively long winter, my senses are clamoring for anything that can transport me to a balmy clime. Lately that’s meant repeated spins of “Watamu Beach,” the latest from Sebbo (aka Sebastian Suckfüll). Whether the Würzburg-based producer’s had the pleasure of visiting the idyllic region of Kenya (a part of […]

Till Von Sein, Sein Days

[Morris / Audio] Till Von Sein’s innate, sophisticated ability to channel the American deep house sound through the prism of Berlin techno is something to behold. This ability has put him among the ranks of Berlin’s impressive list of house loving producers including Efdemin, Sebo K, or Prosumer etc. Late last year, Till Von Sein’s […]

LWE Podcast 01: Terrence Dixon

After nearly a decade and a half of producing and DJing, Detroit native Terrence Dixon seems to constantly redefine what it means to be at the top of his game. I have to admit, though, I wasn’t aware of Dixon until I found last year’s stunning Train of Thought album on Yore Records. His choice of gnarled, densely textured loops was unconventional delight which certainly stood out, as it subtly threaded together a swath of otherwise incongruous sounds into floor-pounding and mind-warping techno tracks. Later I found out he’s been wowing fans since the mid 90’s, with releases on Utensil Records, Tresor and Background. Dixon was kind enough to briefly chat with me and lend Little White Earbuds a recent DJ set of his. It’s a bit low-fi and unfortunately I don’t have a tracklisting, but if you’re feeling cavalier, feel free to trainspot in the comments.
